How to Hongi

The Hongi

What is a hongi?

A hongi is the pressing of noses, which symbolises the exchange of the breath of life

When does the hongi happen?

When the tangata whenua side indicates that the speeches are complete, the manuhiri speakers approach the tangata whenua to hongi

What to do.

1.First you say “kia ora” then you shake their hand softly.
2.You put your left  arm on the other person’s shoulder and lean close to touch noses for 1 second like a comfy pillow.
3.Then you let go of their hand and you are done.

The hongi is important because it shows respect to other people.

Papa

We described a character from the story Rangi and Papa

Papa

Papa the earth mother got separated from Rangi the Sky Father by Tane Mahuta. Rangi’s tears become the rain. Papa was not cold anymore. The trees grew, birds, insects, flowers and berries filled up the trees but Papa was still feeling sad. During the day Papa looked very beautiful. Papa was no longer cold and lonely. The birds were as blue as the sky, the Insects were brown and black, the flowers were red as rose petals and the berries were purple.
